Apocalypse of the Damned Level 9: the Cafetorium

Project type

Pseudo-Game

Date

September 2022 - April 2023

Role

Producer & Design Lead

Game Description

As described in Be More Chill's very catchy song "Two-Player Game," Apocalypse of the Damned Level 9: the Cafetorium represents the experience of a classic arcade zombie shooter being played by two teenage boys. The setting is based off of Stout's Memorial Student Center and the final boss is the university mascot, Blaze the Blue Devil, which were both incorporated as easter eggs for Stout students watching the production. During every performance, this pseudo-game was controlled live behind the scene in order to correctly time its events with the actors' cues.

Game Engine

Unity

A pseudo-game made for the UW-Stout Theatre Department's spring 2023 musical production of Be More Chill...

As the producer and primary design lead for this project, I mostly served as the laison between Stout's Theatre Department and our team of seven total developers. I would meet once or twice a month with Audric Buhr, the Head Director, over the course of development to showcase any progress and discuss any updates that were required for the final performance. Our team, on the other hand, would meet every other week for semiregular Scrum meetings and utilized GitHub for all file management. During the week of performances, the project's gameplay programmer, Tyler Betanski, and I sat in the light and sound booth of the Harvey Hall Theatre and controlled the project manually while it was projected on stage to guarantee the gameplay lined up with the correct cues. The project was a success with audiences and is now advertised by the Theatre Program when recruiting new members as a point showcasing how anyone, regardless of major or discipline, can contribute to theatre without being on stage.
